Basant Panchami is celebrated every year on the fifth day of the bright half of the Hindu lunisolar calendar month of Magha. The festival is particularly observed by Hindus in the Indian subcontinent, notably India and Nepal. It is the birthday of Ma Saraswathi, the Goddess of knowledge, Arts and Music.
Avanamcode Saraswathi Temple located at Nedumbassery in Ernakulam district of Kerala is ready to welcome devotees from all over India to make darshan of Ma Saraswathi as part of the Basant Panchami Festival celebrated from 2 February 2025, Sunday, 9:15 am to 3 February 6:50 am, Monday.
Avanamcode Saraswathi Temple, where Adi Sankaracharya undertook Aksharabhyasam when he was a child, is the only temple in Kerala which celebrates Basant Panchami, the birthday of ‘Ma Saraswathi’, the Goddess of Knowledge, Arts and Music. Being the perfect day to start new investments, business, it is also an ideal day to undertake Aksharabhyasam, Annaprasham, etc. Special arrangements have been made in the temple to hold Aksharabhyasam, which can also be done at this temple in the morning, every day. Aksharabhyasam done here follows ancient ritualistic custom and practice.
Devotees visiting the temple on this day undertake fasting during the day and do Basant Panchami pooja on this auspicious day for attaining prosperity for the family and also to ward off miseries. They take darshan at this Saraswathi temples on this day reciting Saraswathi mantras and strotas. Devotees also do pooja of musical instruments, chilanka, books, etc on Basant Panchami. It is believed that Ma Saraswathi will bless devotees with education, intellect, health and prosperity on this day, and hence, it is important for students, professionals, performers and artists to do darshan and pooja during Basant Panchami.
Time of darshan during Basant Panchami will be from 5:00 am to 11:30 am in the morning and 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm in the evening. Aksharabhyasam (vidyarambham) can be done from 9:15 am to 11:00 am. After Vijayadashami Day, the Basant Panchami is the best day for undertaking Aksharabhyasam at Avanamcode Saraswathi Temple. On this divine day, Special Saraswathi Poojas, MahaSaraswathi Pooja, Veda Mantras, Reading of Puranas, Music Offerings (Classical Nrith-Sangeeth Utsav) will be done in the morning. Devotees can do Basant Panchami Pooja (for individual and for family) on this day. Ma Saraswathi’s favourite Veena Concert will take place in the evening which will be followed by Classical Music and Dance Festival. Devotees can also offer Annadanam on this holy day.
Devotees visiting the temple for darshan from far off places and other states can contact the Dewaswam Office for travel, vehicle and accommodation assistance. Avanamcode Saraswathi Temple is located only one kilometre from the Cochin International Airport (COK). Nearest railway stations are Alwaye (AWY) and Ankamaly for Kalady (AFK). Devotees can also visit Kalady, the birthplace of Adi Sankaracharya which is only 7 Kms from the temple.
